Fr. Louis "Louie" Richard Mraz, osc, dies in Phoenix
The Crosier Community of Phoenix mourns the loss of our confrere.
Fr. Louis "Louie" Richard Mraz, osc, was born March 8, 1928, in Streator, Illinois, to Leo and Susan (Mollo) Mraz.
He died March 13, 2017, at an assisted living home in Phoenix, Arizona, at the age of 89.
Fr. Louie attended the Crosier school in Wawasee, Indiana, in 1952, and entered the Crosier novitiate in Hastings, Nebraska, one year later. He professed his first vows Aug. 28, 1954, in Hastings and was ordained a priest May 30, 1959, in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
After his ordination, Fr. Louie was assigned to the Crosier mission in Agats, Papua, Indonesia, where he served the people there for 20 years. Upon his return to the United States in 1980, Fr. Louie became a member of the Crosier Community of Phoenix. He served as associate pastor at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Scottsdale from 1980 to 1989 and then at St. Helen's Catholic Church in Glendale from 1989 to 2008, when he retired.
Fr. Louie is survived by his cousin, Edward (Darcy) Mollo of Illinois; his Crosier confreres, the parish communities of Blessed Sacrament and St. Helen; and numerous friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Leo Mraz.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 18 at St. Helen's Catholic Church, 5510 W. Cholla St., Glendale, Arizona. Reception of the Body followed by Morning Prayer for the Dead will take place at 9:30 a.m. Visitation will be from 10 a.m.-11 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial to begin at 11 a.m. A luncheon will immediately follow the funeral liturgy. A private burial will take place at a later date.
