Crosier Dcn. Br. Alex Juguilon, osc, ordained to the priesthood in Phoenix
26-MAY-18 (Phoenix, Arizona) – Today, the U.S. Crosier Fathers and Brothers celebrated a very moving sacrament in the Catholic Church—Holy Orders. Dcn. Br. J. Alex Juguilon, osc, 48, was ordained to the priesthood by The Most Reverend Eduardo Nevares, auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of Phoenix. The Mass was held at St. Gregory Catholic Church in Phoenix, where Fr. Alex recently completed his six-month deacon in-service.
At the reception following Mass, Fr. Alex remarked, “My heart is overflowing. There is such joy and love around me and, I am grateful for everyone’s support and prayers. This is the happiest day of my life.”
Prior Provincial Tom Enneking, osc, said, “On behalf of my confreres in Phoenix and Onamia, Minnesota, we congratulate Fr. Alex for having reached this moment in his journey in response to God's call in his life, and we thank God for calling Fr. Alex to Crosier Religious Life.”
Fr. Tom went on to say, “"Fr. Alex, the love you have for the Church and for Jesus Christ has brought you to this moment in your journey of faith. May that same love of Christ permeate your life of service as a priest and be a rich source of blessing for all those you serve."
Fr. Alex celebrates his Mass of Thanksgiving on Sunday, May 27 at St. Greg’s. He will also celebrate a First Mass at the National Shrine of St. Odilia on July 22 and another at his home parish in Ohio.
In early March, Master General Laurentius Tarpin, osc, approved then Br. Alex's request for ordination to the priesthood. It was one year ago that Br. Alex made his solemn profession on May 21, 2017, at the Priory Church of the Holy Cross in Phoenix. He was later ordained to the diaconate on June 17 at Holy Cross Priory Church in Onamia, Minnesota, by the Diocese of St. Cloud Bishop Donald Kettler.
Through their mission preaching efforts around the country, Fr. Alex became acquainted with the Crosiers. One of the priests frequently visited Cleveland, and thus Fr. Alex was inspired by the Crosier ministry and fraternity.
Fr. Alex said that daily prayer for the Blessed Mother’s intercession helped him discover God’s desire for his life as it was during quiet moments of listening to God that he received his answer. Fr. Alex joined the Crosiers as a novice in 2011 and made his first profession of vows the following year.
Fr. Alex was born in Manila, Philippines, and raised in North Royalton, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland. He was a member of St. Albert the Great Church in North Royalton, where he founded a monthly men’s prayer group, was an adult male server at daily Mass and volunteered with RCIA. He has also been active in the Totus Tuus International Eucharistic, Consecration, Scapular and Rosary Novena Crusade, made in response to Pope John Paul II's appeals.
Prior to joining the Crosiers, Fr. Alex worked as a doctor of sleep medicine in the Cleveland area. His training occurred in Circadian and Sleep Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. He has a doctorate of medicine and surgery from the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery in Manila. He attended Boston University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree, and St. Ignatius Preparatory High School in Cleveland.
Fr. Alex will continue serving at St. Greg's parish working with the pastor, Fr. Andres Arango; celebrating Mass and teaching religious education to grades 6-8 at St. Gregory Catholic School in Phoenix.
