Fr. Richard Michael McGuire, osc, dies in Arizona

The Crosier Community of Phoenix mourns the loss of our confrere.

The youngest of six children, Fr. Richard Michael McGuire, osc, was born May 20, 1945, in St. Paul, Minnesota, to John and Edith May (Bower) McGuire. 
 
He died Sept. 30, 2015, at the Banner-University Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona, at the age of 70.
 
Fr. Rick enrolled in college at Crosier Seminary Junior College in Onamia, Minnesota, in 1963 and then earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from Purdue University in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and completed his graduate studies in theology from the Crosier House of Studies, also in Fort Wayne. He professed his first vows Aug. 28, 1966, in Hastings, Nebraska, and was ordained a priest May 12, 1973, in Fort Wayne.
 
Throughout most of his years of service, Fr. Rick worked in parish ministry in Hastings, Nebraska; Shoreview and Anoka, Minnesota; Fort Wayne; and Phoenix. He also worked for many years in chaplaincy services at hospitals in St. Paul; Fort Wayne and Marion, Indiana; and New Rochelle, New York. Fr. Rick served as parochial vicar at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Chandler, Arizona, since 2005. 
 
He was awarded the Mary Kennedy-Lamb Achievement Award by the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis's Commission on Women in 1997 and was the recipient of the 1994 Crosier Recognition Award. He also completed a certificate from the Mexican-American Cultural Center's Pastoral Spanish Program in 2004.
 
Fr. Rick is survived by a sister: Helen (Arvid) "Joan" Stone of Key Largo, Florida; nieces: Kathleen, Mary Lou, Joan, Maureen, Patricia, Clarissa, Lori, Katie and Jeanne; nephews: Martin, Matthew, Michael, John, Cecile; numerous great-nieces and nephews; his Crosier confreres and the parish community of St. Andrew. He is preceded in death by his brothers: Frank "Mickey" and Br. Martin "John" McGuire, osc; and sisters: Mary Kay Quimby and Marjorie "Midge" McGuire.
 
In Arizona: On Sunday, Oct. 4, Reception of the Body will take place immediately following the conclusion of the 5:30 p.m. Mass at St. Andrew's, 3450 W. Ray Road in Chandler. Evening Prayer for the Dead will begin at 7 p.m. On Monday, Oct. 5, Morning Prayer for the Dead and viewing of the body will begin at 10 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial taking place at 11 a.m. also at St. Andrew's in Chandler. A luncheon will immediately follow the funeral liturgy. 
 
In Minnesota: Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. with viewing of the body beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at St. Odilia Catholic Church, 3495 N. Victoria, Shoreview, Minnesota. A luncheon will immediately follow Mass. An afternoon prayer service will be offered at the Priory of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 104 Crosier Drive North in Onamia, Minnesota, with a private burial at the Crosier cemetery.
